Questions We Hear a Lot

What will my move cost?

Two things drive it: the size of the load and how easy the access is. A truck with two movers opens at $110/hr, and you get a written estimate in hand before the first box moves. Prefer a set number? Ask Leonard for a flat quote and the figure you agree on is what you pay. When the move crosses state lines, we price it on weight and distance instead.

My place is an old adobe on a narrow Eastside lane. Can you handle it?

That is a lot of what we do. The historic homes off Canyon Road and around the Eastside sit on skinny dirt lanes with thick adobe doorways, low viga ceilings, kiva corners, and saltillo-tile floors that scratch if you rush. We measure the turns, pad the jambs, lay floor runners, and hand-carry anything that will not clear a tight portal.

Do you do loading and unloading only, or PODs and rental trucks?

Yes to all of it. Plenty of Santa Fe folks rent a truck or drop a POD and just need strong, careful hands to load or unload it, and that is a job Leonard has done for years. We load a rented truck tight so nothing shifts on I-25, unload a freight truck or container, or handle the whole move door to door, whatever you need.

There is no driveway and the lane is tight. Is that a problem?

Not at all, and it is normal downtown and on the Eastside. Give us the address when you book and we figure out where the truck can sit, how far the carry runs, and whether we shuttle with a smaller vehicle. Our crew shows up expecting a narrow lane and a longer walk, not a wide suburban driveway.

When does the hourly clock start?

Timing starts when Leonard and the crew begin working at your door, not the moment we leave the yard. After the first hour we bill by the minute, so seventy minutes is seventy minutes and never rounded up to a flat two hours. Before a single box is lifted, we lay out the rate and how any drive time is counted.

Do you take a deposit?

Only a small refundable one to hold your date, and it comes straight off your final total as a credit, so it is never money lost. Cancel with a couple of days’ notice and you get every cent back. It is all written into your booking from the start.

How and when do I pay?

Nothing is owed until the job is done, not a minute before. Cards, check, and cash all work. Right at your door, before we leave, you go over the final total with Leonard and sign off on it.

Are tips expected?

Not at all, and nothing is ever slipped onto the invoice. If the crew really earns it, plenty of folks hand over ten to fifteen percent for the guys to split, cash or card, but that call is entirely yours.

Is there anything you won’t load?

Only a short list, and it comes down to safety and the law: propane, gasoline, paint, and anything flammable, plus ammunition, houseplants, perishable food, and pets. Have something oversized, very heavy, or especially valuable? Flag it when you book so we bring the right gear.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Leonard’s Moving Services is a licensed, insured New Mexico mover, and Leonard runs the job with his own crew from start to finish, with no broker in the middle taking a cut. Happy to share the coverage details, just ask, and we will go over your valuation choices before anything is final.

What if a piece gets damaged?

Careful padding makes it rare, but if a piece does take a hit we note it right there and start the claim that same day. Before the job we go over released against full-value coverage, so you know exactly how a claim would work.

How far ahead should I book?

For a standard local move, a week or two of notice usually does it. Month-end and the summer stretch fill up fast, so aim for three or four weeks then, and add a little for a Saturday. Last-minute openings do come up, though, so a quick call never hurts.

Do you move pianos, gun safes, and heavy items?

Yes, and Leonard handles them regularly. An upright or a baby grand, a loaded safe, a slate pool table, a heavy antique, or a framed canvas, each one rides the right board or dolly under proper straps and pads, and we plan the route through the tight spots ahead of time.

Will you handle the packing?

As much or as little as you want. Need the whole house boxed? Done. Just the kitchen and the art? That works too. We bring sturdy cartons and paper, label each box by room, and can unpack you at the new place once the truck is empty.

Do you move out of state?

We do, and your load stays with the same crew from pickup to drop-off. It is never brokered out or shuffled into a stranger’s trailer at a depot, and you get a delivery window you can actually plan around. We move plenty of folks in and out of New Mexico.

Do you have storage?

We do. A short gap between closings or several months while the next place comes together, either way your things sit in a clean, locked space with every item logged. Our crew carries it in and back out, so you never rent a truck twice.

I’m moving to Santa Fe from out of town. Can you help?

For sure, a good share of our work is people arriving in town, many of them settling in from out of state. We line up the delivery window, meet you at the new place, and sort out the parking, the narrow lane, or the gate on our end. Your things ride on our truck, with our crew, and are never handed off to whoever underbids that week.

Can I move or cancel my date?

Of course. Reschedule or cancel with two days’ notice or more and your full deposit comes back. Every condition is written into your booking in plain words, so nothing is left to guesswork.
